Why do we develop oligoclonals as secondary antibodies?
Oligoclonal antibodies are a set of monoclonal antibodies optimized for detection of rat or mouse primary antibodies as secondary antibodies.
 
The reasons we develop oligoclonal antibodies are as below.
 
1.  To reduce background caused by cross-reactions by polyclonal antibodies
 
There are several situations in which both rat and murine immunoglobulins are existed. For example, rat monoclonals are frequently used as primary antibodies for detection of proteins expressed by mice, where intrinsic mouse immunoglobulins may be around. Another example is double staining assays in which rat antibodies are often used in combination with murine antibodies. To avoid high background, the anti-rat or anti-mouse secondary antibodies must not cross-react with rat or murine primary antibodies. However most secondary antibodies on market are polyclonals and are difficult to avoid cross-reactivity without thorough pre-absorbance with mouse or rat immunoglobulins.
 
Oligoclonal antibodies do not react with immunoglobulins of their own species. Therefore, there is little or no background caused by cross-reactivity when using them as secondary antibodies.
 
2. To keep high sensitivities as polyclonal antibodies   
 
Compared to monoclonal antibodies, polyclonal antibodies often have higher sensitivities as they can recognize several epitopes on an antigen whereas monoclonal antibodies can only recognize one. The oligoclonal antibodies we develop are composed by several monoclonal antibodies. Therefore, they can recognize several epitopes and have high sensitivity that is comparable to the polyclonal antibodies.
 
3. To reduce batch variations of polyclonal antibodies
 
Polyclonal antibodies are from immunized animals. As immune responses various from one animal to another, batch variation is often seen in polyclonal antibodies. Our oligoclonal antibodies are composed by monoclonal antibodies that are purified from cell culture. As long as we keep each monoclonal antibody concentration unchanged, the batch variation will be not a problem.  
 
Our current oligoclonal antibody products:
 
1. HRP conjugated anti-rat IgG (Fc specific) oligoclonal antibody (Product No. OLIGOAB01), which is suitable in test where intrinsic murine antibody is around. 
 
2. HRP conjugated anti-rat IgG (Heavey and light chains) oligoclonal antibody (Product No. OLIGOAB02). The antibody also recognizes IgM and is suitable in test where intrinsic murine antibody is around. 
 
Oligoclonal antibodies will be ready soon:
 
1. FITC conjugated anti-rat IgG (Fc specific) oligoclonal antibody (Product No. OLIGOAB03), which is suitable in test where intrinsic murine antibody is around. 
 
2. FITC conjugated anti-rat IgG (Heavey and light chains) oligoclonal antibody (Product No. OLIGOAB04). The antibody also recognizes IgM and is suitable in test where intrinsic murine antibody is around.
 
3.  Biotin conjugated anti-rat IgG (Fc specific) oligoclonal antibody (Product No. OLIGOAB05), which is suitable in test where intrinsic murine antibody is around. 
 
4.  Biotin conjugated anti-rat IgG (Heavey and light chains) oligoclonal antibody (Product No. OLIGOAB06). The antibody also recognizes IgM and is suitable in test where intrinsic murine antibody is around.
 
5.  Anti-mouse IgG oligoclonal antibodies conjugated with HRP, FITC and biotin.
 
6.  Anti-rat IgM oligoclonal antibodies conjugated with HRP, FITC and biotin.
 
7.  F(ab’)2 anti-rat IgG oligoclonal antibody and F(ab’)2 anti-mouse IgG oligoclonal antibody combinations. The antibodies are labelled with HRP, ALP, FITC and biotin. The antibodies are suitable for double stains when rat or murine antibodies are primary antibodies.
